Michail Paule was born in the late 1890s in Russia. From 1930 till 1937 he was a patient in a psychiatric hospital in the Russian town of Saratov. There he drew his first pictures. Like Hans Prinzhorn from Heidelberg, Professor Hamburg, the head of the hospital, collected the artistic works of his patients and kept them as visual aids for his students. Thanks to Prof. Hamburg, the paintings by Michail Paule were not lost.

In 1937, Paule was discharged from the hospital. During the subsequent two years, he was employed at the hospital as a menial worker. Michail Paul died in 1939.
